
Better than Sprinkles?
Our community blogger Stephen Craig reviewed the Sweet Spot Baker’s Workshop in December, dishing about the quality of the cupcakes. I ventured to their Irvine Spectrum location on Super Bowl Sunday to explore a different angle: what’s it like to take a 4-year-old to decorate her very own cupcakes?
In a word: messy.
In another word, this one from my daughter: “yummy.”

My little girl had a blast frosting her own cupcakes and choosing her own toppings. And while the economic news seems to get worse each day, the business is thriving, said owner Chris Brown, with plans to open another location in Los Angeles within a year.
Seems people are more than willing to pay $4.75 for a do-it-yourself indulgence. If you prefer to leave the frosting and decorating up to the pros, pre-made cupcakes can be bought for $3.25 each, the same price as cult-favorite Sprinkles in Newport Beach.
Speaking of Sprinkles, my husband declared Sweet Spot’s cupcakes “better than Sprinkles.” As for me, I thought they were comparable.
