Allergan eying expansion of Irvine campus

June 16th, 2009, 2:22 pm by Brian Martinez

Allergan Inc. is looking to overhaul its Orange County headquarters with a new four-story, 250,000 square foot office building at the companies Irvine Business Complex campus.

Allergan, the maker of Botox and other health care drugs and devices, submitted the expansion plans to city officials in late-March. The new building would be located on Allergan owned-land at 18522 Von Karman Avenue, adjacent to the company’s current headquarters at 2525 Dupont.

The proposal, which requires the company to demolish at least one of its current structures, has yet to come before the city’s planning commission.

City officials described Allergan’s proposal as “a positive sign for Irvine’s economy.” Allergan’s campus is based within the Irvine Business Complex, a more than 2,500 square foot swath of commercial and industrial space near the John Wayne Airport that city officials are hoping to transform into a bustling mixed-use environment.

While city officials recently released long-term plans for the Irvine Business Complex that would bring 6,000 new housing units and $70 million in improvements, the economic downturn has brought new construction in the area to a standstill.

Allergan officials declined to comment on their expansion plans, only noting that their board approved construction of a new office building in July 2007.

Spotlight: La Sirena Grill in Orchard Hills

Blackened Salmon Salad from La Sirena.

The food
La Serena offers an authentic Mexican taste with mostly traditional entrée choices. They don’t offer mixed-item platters on the menu, but they eagerly accommodated my request for a plate with one taquito, one taco and one enchilada – all of which were awesome. They did not accommodate my request for a crispy taco, but the freshly made, soft corn tortilla they did give me was delicious. My dining partner loved her Blackened Salmon Salad. It included organic mixed greens, avocados, tomatoes, cucumbers, red onions, papaya salsa, roasted bell peppers and a lime-cilantro dressing.

The setting
The outside seating is inviting and fun. The inside is a bit small and plain, but the brick walls and a window into the kitchen are nice touches.

The service was great. There are no waiters or waitresses, but the staffers who took our order, brought the food to our table and cleared our dishes were friendly and efficient.

If you’re looking for that perfect dessert – or just happen to have an overactive sweet tooth – be sure to stop by Marie Callender’s sometime this month.

The restaurant chain, which was made famous by their fresh baked pies, is having their semi-annual pie sale right now.  Customers who visit the Marie Callender’s location in Culver Plaza can take home any whole pie for just $6.99 (plus the cost of the tin).

Depending upon the pie you choose, that should save you at least a couple of dollars.  And these days, that can be a very sweet thing indeed.

Culver Plaza is located at the corner of Irvine Center Drive and Culver Drive.  The phone number for the restaurant is 949-552-2101.

The food

Healthy juice drinks, smoothies and breakfast smoothies.

“The Berry Fulfilling” is incredible and comes in at under 180 calories. Filled with strawberries, bananas, and apple-strawberry juice, it’s indeed a filling and healthy way to enjoy lunch. Instead of the typical burger or salad, I was in the mood for something sweet, filling and healthy. I got exactly what I asked for. There are a number of “Free Boosts” you get with your drink ranging from the Daily Vitamin to Calcium. There’s also “Super Boosts,” for a few coins more and they also sell “Daily Shots,” (Matcha Energy and Wheatgrass Detox.)

The setting

Colorful, smells just as fresh as you’d imagine with all the citrus aromas hitting your senses as soon as you walk in, and then some.

Local firm competing in O.C. ‘Canstruction’

September 4th, 2008, 5:17 pm by Brian Martinez

RBF Consulting in Irvine is participating in the Orange County Canstruction competition at South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa. The event starts Sept. 6. As one of twelve design teams in the contest, RBF Consulting is joining the fight against hunger by supporting families in need through the donation of canned food to Orange County Food Bank.

Firms will design, build and display a structure made of canned food. Each design team is responsible for acquiring their own cans for their structure, which they must build overnight between 10 p.m. and the 10 a.m. opening of the mall. After the contest, all of the food goes to Orange County Food Bank.

RBF - a civil engineering, planning and surveying consulting company - plans to create a 4,000-can structure titled “Bridging Hunger.”
