Allergan Inc. is looking to overhaul its Orange County headquarters with a new four-story, 250,000 square foot office building at the companies Irvine Business Complex campus.
Allergan, the maker of Botox and other health care drugs and devices, submitted the expansion plans to city officials in late-March. The new building would be located on Allergan owned-land at 18522 Von Karman Avenue, adjacent to the company’s current headquarters at 2525 Dupont.
The proposal, which requires the company to demolish at least one of its current structures, has yet to come before the city’s planning commission.
City officials described Allergan’s proposal as “a positive sign for Irvine’s economy.” Allergan’s campus is based within the Irvine Business Complex, a more than 2,500 square foot swath of commercial and industrial space near the John Wayne Airport that city officials are hoping to transform into a bustling mixed-use environment.
While city officials recently released long-term plans for the Irvine Business Complex that would bring 6,000 new housing units and $70 million in improvements, the economic downturn has brought new construction in the area to a standstill.
Allergan officials declined to comment on their expansion plans, only noting that their board approved construction of a new office building in July 2007.
