The Gadgetress has a nice piece up about a cell phone with service from Irvine-based Boost Mobile being used by students to take photos from space.

They used a balloon and did it on a budget of $150 with off-the-shelf products.

The price seems just right for do-it-yourselfers, so I say Boost Mobile should organize an event at the Great Park and have people bring their homebrew projects and launch them into space themselves.
