To ring in the holidays, all 189 locations of Peet’s Coffee will be serving free java and tea on Dec. 24.

What’s the catch? There doesn’t seem to be one, other than the fact that the cafe chain is seeking donations for various nonprofit organizations to fill a growing shortfall. Employees of each retail location choose a charity of choice, and the company will match up to $1,000 of customer contributions.

Interested? In Irvine, Peet’s has a retail location near UC Irvine and one at Orchard Hills. Nearby, in Tustin, there’s a storefront at Newport Avenue and Irvine Boulevard.

The chain is also enticing customers with free shipping on all Web orders through Jan. 7, 2009. All you have to do is sign up for the company’s e-mail newsletter.
