Irvine’s Hines Horticulture Inc., which operates seven nurseries, has filed for bankruptcy protection and will likely sell off its assets. The 88-year-old company grows and sells plants, flowers and shrubs to big-box stores such as Wal-Mart and hardware stores such as Lowe’s and Home Depot.
Hines said in a statement that poor weather, high material costs and demand for low prices contributed to its financial status. As of November 2007, the company reported an 11 percent drop in sales from those in the previous year.
