Paper or canvas? Whole Foods dropping plastic grocery bags

February 8th, 2008, 3:00 am · Post a Comment · posted by Brian Martinez

Whole Foods Market will eliminate plastic grocery bags from all 170 of its stores by Earth Day - April 22 - calling the move “our gift to the planet.”

Shoppers at the 60,000-square-foot Tustin location can still lug home their groceries in environmentally-friendly paper bags made from 100 percent recycled material, but the company hopes its customers will opt for reusable canvas bags, the most evironmentally-friendly option of all.

To encourage reusables, Whole Foods’ will continue to refund 5 cents per bag to customers who take to heart the company’s BYOB philosophy – bring your own bag. Once stores run through their remaining stock of plastic bags, shoppers will be faced with a new choice in the checkout line: Paper or canvas?
